Truth, or a bunch of fluffy, unicorn-rainbow-nonsense meant to make authors feel better when the rejections come rolling in?
Well, that all depends on your goals as a writer. If your greatest desire is to see your paperback on the shelf at Walmart, or Barnes & Noble, then you might want to give some serious thought to writing strictly for the traditional market. If you’re one of the fortunate few, your heart and the current publishing house trends will match, however, for the rest of us . . .
Many people just don’t get it when I tell them I don’t care if I ever see my books sitting on a shelf at the local bookstore. If it means trading in my dreams, my imagination, my very heart and soul as a writer, then . . . um . . . never mind. I’m okay. Really. I like the idea of going indie with them, being my own boss, hiring my own editor and cover designer. I’m okay with putting in my time on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Networked Blogs.
I get to meet new people all the time, and all while working out of my kitchen, right in the center of my family’s life. I get to follow my dream of writing the stories that have filled my head since I was a child, without anyone telling me no one wants a Christian-themed romance set in historic Scotland.
No one. Seriously?
It’s a big world out there. And since I don’t have to sell as many copies as a publishing house, I think I will be okay. I hope I will be okay… Either way, I have to try. Because, if I abandon my dreams, then what’s the point of writing in the first place. Let’s face it; I would make a steadier income stocking the shelves at Barnes & Noble than I am now.
